Product Description
How Do Drum Brakes Work on a Forklift?
Understanding the mechanics of a drum brake can help you appreciate its importance in maintaining safety. A drum brake relies on friction to slow down or stop a vehicle. It consists of several key components including the brake wheel cylinder, brake shoes, brake drum, friction material, and return springs.
When the brake pedal is pressed, brake fluid moves into the master cylinder and through hoses to each brake caliper. The calipers' pistons apply pressure to the brake shoes against the drum, causing the drum to slow down due to friction. Because the drum rotates with the wheel, the force applied to the brake shoes creates an asymmetrical pressure that either amplifies or diminishes the braking force, depending on which shoe is leading or trailing.
